"I'll Never Honey Again" is a song from the 2018 film A Star Is Born, performed by its stars Lady Gaga and managing director Bradley Cooper whose grapheme sings the final chorus in the flashback scene. The soundtrack contained both versions of the vocal including the extended version that featured Gaga as the sole performer. Gaga wrote the song with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere. Both tracks were produced past Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.

The song has received widespread critical acclamation and has reached the top of the Slovakian digital charts, the peak-ten of the record charts in Hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the digital charts of Hellenic republic, combined-Europe, Luxembourg and Spain. "I'll Never Beloved Again" received a contemporary hit radio release in France as the album'south 3rd single on May 27, 2019. It won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media, a twelvemonth after the album'due south lead single "Shallow" won in the same category.

Background and composition [edit]

When Gaga was getting set up to film the final scene of A Star Is Born, where she sings "I'll Never Love Again", the vocaliser got a telephone call that her childhood friend Sonja Durham was in her final moments of Stage Iv cancer. Gaga left the set and drove to meet Durham, only she arrived ten minutes after her friend died. She asked Durham's husband if she should render to filming; he replied, "You've gotta practice what Sonja would want you to do", so she returned to the set. Co-star and director Bradley Cooper was supportive of Gaga's loss but Gaga was determined well-nigh finishing the scene, then she stepped on the ready and sang "I'll Never Love Again". The singer said, "[Sonja] gave me a tragic gift that day and I took it with me to [the] set, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very same day within an hour."[ane]

Along with the picture version, the soundtrack also contains an extended version. Gaga wrote the song with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere.[two] [3] Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.[4] The song is performed in the key of G major with a moderate tempo of 54 beats per minute in mutual time. It follows a chord progression of Gadd2–Emvii–Cmaj9–D9sus in the verses and Yardadd2–Em7(no3)–Cmaj9/E–D9sus in the chorus. Gaga'southward vocals span from Chiliad3 to E5.[five] Brian Truitt of USA Today described the song as a "weepy" ballad.[vi]

Release and operation [edit]

The song was first chosen as the 3rd single from the soundtrack on May 27, 2019 in France, where it was serviced to contemporary hit radio stations.[7] After soundtrack release, the song debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 nautical chart in the Us[8] and has since sold 226,000 copies in the land, while accumulating 66 meg streams.[9] Additionally, the vocal has reached the summit ten position in Hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the meridian 10 of digital charts in Greece, Spain and Luxembourg, reaching the chart meridian in Slovakia.

Critical reception [edit]

The song received universal acclaim. In her review of the film, Melina Newman of Billboard called the ballad "stunning".[x] The magazine's Tatiana Cirisano ranked Lady Gaga'due south performance of "I'll Never Love Again" as the picture show's best scene and wrote, "Not only are the lyrics devastatingly cute, simply Gaga/Ally showcases her full, skyscraper-loftier range."[11] Jon Pareles of The New York Times compared the song to Harry Nilsson'due south "Without Yous" and Eric Carmen'due south "All by Myself", and complimented Gaga's "former-schoolhouse finesse, timing, emotionality and lung power".[12] Pitchfork 's Larry Fitzmaurice called the vocal a "stunning, heart-wrenching closer" and wrote, "... even though 'I'll Never Love Once again' is plenty effective on its own, the dialogue-included version of the song dramatically cuts out in its terminal seconds the aforementioned way the film does: jumping back in fourth dimension from Gaga'due south fourth dimension-stopping performance to a pivotal and heartbreaking scene that only enhances the vocal'due south emotional caliber".[13]

In his film review, Ty Burr of The Boston World said Gaga's "climactic memorial" performance of the vocal "will leave you a soggy mess whether you like it or non".[14] Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter predicted the song would earn Gaga an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.[15] USA Today 'due south Patrick Ryan wrote, "And with 'I'll Never Love Over again,' the film'due south devastating emotional closer, Gaga gets her own Whitney Houston moment, powering through a formidable number well-nigh dear and loss with searing vulnerability and grace. It'southward a transcendent achievement that could single-handedly net the singer-turned-actress her commencement Oscar, reminding us yet once more that she'southward i of the best vocalists right at present in whatever genre, popular or otherwise."[sixteen]
